Early Pregnancy Loss
Early pregnancy loss is taken by most expectant couples as a tragedy. Most people do not realize miscarriage is a natural mechanism that protects against serious malformations. About 70% of all conceptions are lost, usually so early in pregnancy that most women do not even know that conception had occurred.
The heart beat is obvious by 4 weeks after conception with most ultrasound units. We have found that a form of heart failure occurs in a high percentage of cases of early pregnancy loss and that Doppler indications of the contractile force of the heart of the embryo determines which pregnancies will continue and which will not with 98% accuracy. An early stage ultrasound exam is an integral part of pregnancy wellness testing.
The age old notion that many women still believe is: all conceptions are normal, and if a miscarriage occurs, then there must be something wrong with the uterus or something that mom did that caused the pregnancy to fail.
That is ABSOLUTELY WRONG. An embryo develops inside a shielded and insulated micro-environment that is very well protected against external factors.
Spotting is pretty common from capillary bleeding at the outer margin of the tissue that will form the placenta. This is referred to as 'implantation' bleeding, which has no effect on the course of pregnancy. It is natural for women with spotting to fear miscarriage. Any question about viability will be resolved by an ultrasound look.
